FINAL PROJECT [HOME]

To wrap up the course, I am assigning a creative project that incorporates the production concepts and the writing/arranging principals we’ve covered in class on the newest application we’ve used: Digital Performer. The criteria is very flexible, allowing you to explore things of interest to you. HOWEVER, you need to produce 2:00 minutes of music alone (or 1:00 of music with other media), employ Digital Performer, and feature electronic music elements (i.e. synth and sampled sound, DSP, etc.).

EITHER PICK ONE OF THE FOLLOWING, OR GET A PROJECT IDEA OF YOUR OWN APPROVED BY YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Media Theme. Create a “main theme” for either the Morning News or a fictional video game. If you go with the news theme, you might see if you can get the opening montage (in QuickTime video if possible) from the PMN staff to score in DP. We can convert standard file formats (i.e. AVI, MPEG).
Score a Slide Show. Select a bunch of related images (paintings, photos, etc.) that make an artistic statement. Use PowerPoint or iMovie to create a QuickTime movie, then score in DP.
Produce Another Song (excerpt). Write, perform, and record a song, similar to the holiday CD production. This time, you may create an original song (any style), an arrangement of a public domain tune, or even a "cover.". Use principals of production (good signals, good mix, appropriate use of effects) and arranging (form, layering, 100% rule) discussed in class. You’ll probably only have time to do about 3:00 of music well, so don’t "bite of more than you can chew." An example of this might be a blues tune that has an Intro., 12-bar “Head”(statement of the tune), Solo Chorus (or two), Return to the Head, and Outro.
Electronic Art Music Collage. Combine MIDI recording with musique concrete audio. Slice and dice, layer, fade, and cross fade to create an avant garde soundscape or work of classical electronica (i.e. Paul Lansky) with DP.
Score a Poem (or other narration). Record a spoken text in an audio track, then score the reading with DP.

TIMELINE. The second marking period ends January 28; I want your project ready to play in class ON WED., JAN. 20 - no exceptions. This gives you a week and a half to complete the project from start to finish. The following timeline should help you stay on track:
  • Tues., Jan. 11 – Decide upon project, collaborator (if any), begin setting up DP tracks, chart your approach (form, performers, what needs to be programmed, order of steps to accomplish).
  • Wed., Jan. 12 through Fri., Jan. 14 – Begin placing loops, programming tracks, recording live instruments/voice,
  • Tues., Jan. 18 through Wed., Jan. 19 – Either continue working, or share near complete draft with Dr. Watson or another for feedback.
  • Fri., Jan. 21 – Your final step: Perform your Final Project for the class (and any guests you'd like to invite) in our "Recital of Final Projects."

GRADING - We'll use this rubric: .
